Gear

Philmont’s recommended Equipment List is divided into 3 sections: Your Personal Equipment, Equipment Provided by Crew, and Equipment Provided by Philmont.

Some gear may be a bit more specialized then what your typical weekend camping trip may require. For instance, a backpack, or sleeping bag suitable for backpacking. If you would like to borrow gear from another Scout or Scouter, please reach out to Mr. Buckingham and he can help connect families with previous Philmont participants who may have gear they are willing to loan.

Backpack – Philmont recommends a 65-75L backpack. Anything smaller will not be able to hold your personal gear, food, and your share of the crew gear. Be sure to have your backpack properly fitted.

To learn more, please visit REI’s How to Choose a Backpack.

Sleeping Bag – Philmont recommends a sleeping bag rated at 20°F or less, and weigh less than 5 lbs. Your current “weekend” sleeping bag may not meet these criteria, or pack small enough to fit in your backpack.

To learn more, please visit REI’s How to Choose Sleeping Bags for Backpacking.

Boots – Properly fitted boots are key to an enjoyable experience. Be sure that boots are properly broken in before arriving at Philmont. It is recommended that you visit an outfitter to be properly fitted for boots.

To learn more, please visit REI’s Hiking Boot Basics series of Expert Advice.

50-Miler Award

50-miler Award
To earn the Philmont Arrowhead Patch, participants complete a 3-hour trail / conservation project at Philmont.  To earn the BSA 50-Miler Award, participants will need to complete an additional 7-hours of trail / conservation work.  We will organize a workday at Camp Crooked Creek to complete the remaining hours together and earn the 50-Miler Award!
